Four and a half miles each way along the Old Military Road from Stronachlachar to Upper Inversnaid - a well surfaced although undulating path close to Loch Arklet, with wonderful views of the Arrochar Alps.
Stronachlachar, lnversnaid...names to roll around the tongue, associated with romance, cattle rustling, Rob Roy Macgregor, the Redcoats.
This old military road linked the military garrison at Upper lnversnaid beside Loch Lomond to Stronachlachar on Loch Katrine. Just before Stronachlachar the military road turned south and headed south to Aberfoyle.
To reach the starting point, drive from Milngavie to Aberfoyle, then follow the winding road along the south side of Loch Ard to Kinlochard and continue along Loch Chon to a point 300 yards before its junction with the Stronachlachar-lnversnaid road. It's a beautiful ride alongside Loch Chon.
There is space for parking where the path of Old Military Road path crosses the road from Aberfoyle. Park and cross the road onto the signposted path. It is a well surfaced, all-weather path having recently been constructed. It passes the eastern end of Loch Arklet and crosses the Stronachlachar-Inversnaid road where it rises gently. Beyond a lochan the path traverses the hillside on the north side of Loch Arklet, a dam built early in the last century to top up the water level of Loch Katrine to provide a sure water supply for Glasgow.
The truly memorable aspect of the walk is the wanderful view you have of the Arrochar Alps which dominate the western skyline ahead. The elevation of the path ensures that you see the Alps without the lower lying hills in front of them obstructing a clear view of their peaks. After four miles Garrison Farm is reached. Behind it is the ruined wall of the Garrison Fort which was built in 1720 to house 100 redcoats. The purpose of the garrison was partly to ensure that there would be no further highland rebellion to follow the 1715 Rising and to suppress the cattle raiding of Rob Roy Macgregor. At the farm a new RSPB oﬂice has been opened to serve the RSPB Reserve.
About 300 yards beyond Garrison Farm is the lnversnaid Bunkhouse. The path then descends to Inversnaid on the banks of Loch Lomond. On the return along the trail there are views of the hills to the north and east of Loch Katrine.
