RIVER CLYDE WALKWAY - CYCLE RUN - ROUTE DESCRIPTION:

Stretching from Glasgow to the famous falls above New Lanark, the Clyde Walkway is a great resource for walkers and cyclists alike. This route follows the most southerly section — Crossford to the Falls of Clyde — and is the most demanding of the 40-mile ( 65km ) trail as it features ﬂights of steps, steep gradients and unprotected drops.
In Crossford take the bridge over the Clyde, joining the walkway on the right and watching out for other users.
An attractive, leafy, stretch leads to Stonebyres Falls. after which the trail recrosses the river to join the A72 (footpath) as it leads into Kirkﬁeldbank. Here take the old, humpbacked bridge and go right.
Steeper ground is tackled to reach Castlebank House before a descent on a zig-zag path. Soon you will reach New Lanark, the former mill-based community where owner and social reformer Robert Owen abolished child labour and provided unprecedented social beneﬁts for the workers.
Head upstream into the Falls of Clyde Wildlife Reserve — home to nesting peregrines. The route, which passes above the eyrie. is only suitable for mountain bikes. Go slowly. After passing through a stone opening. the ﬁrst of the Falls lies below. Further on, the path follows a curved boardwalk by the river. Pass a power station to a lookout over Corra Linn, the highest of the falls. Next is Bonnington Linn. Cross the river here and turn right, to return to Kirkﬁeldbank and Crossford.
