Darjeeling Himalayan Railway in NE India The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway ( the " Toy Train " ) is a 2-foot ( 610mm ) narrow gauge railway from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling in West Bengal. It
was
built between 1879 and 1881 and is about 86km ( 53 miles )
long.
The elevation level is from about 100 metres ( 328ft ) at New Jalpaiguri to some 2,200 metres ( 7,218ft ) at Darjeeling. |

is renowned as a tourist destination
and for its tea industry and the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway. Darjeeling is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The majority of the population are ethnic Nepalese:- Gurung, Limbu, Rai, Tamang, Lepcha, Bhutia, Sherpa and Newar. There are road connections with Kathmandu in Nepal. |
